How to Master the XY-Wing Strategy in Sudoku
When even advanced strategies like the X-Wing don’t clear the board, it is time to look for a more fluid, interconnected pattern. The XY-Wing technique (sometimes called the Y-Wing) is a powerful expert-level strategy.
By understanding the relationship between just three specific cells, you can eliminate candidates across multiple sections of the grid simultaneously.
Anatomy of an XY-Wing: Base and Wings
To find this pattern, you need to look for three interconnected cells that contain exactly two candidates each. These three cells share a total pool of three digits (which we can call X, Y, and Z).
Let’s start with the following example:

- Locate the Pivot: First, locate a cell that contains exactly two candidates. This cell is referred to as the “Base” cell (or Pivot). Let’s assume its candidates are X and Y.
- Find the Wings: Next, identify two other cells that align with the Base cell but belong to different units. These are the “Wings.”
- Check the Candidates: In these two cells, one of the candidates must match one of the candidates in the Base cell, while the other candidate must be present in both of these aligned cells.
- Wing 1 (shares a unit with Base): Contains candidates X and Z.
- Wing 2 (shares a different unit with Base): Contains candidates Y and Z.

The Irrefutable Logic Behind the Strategy
The magic of the XY-Wing comes from tracking what happens to the shared candidate Z based on the outcome of the Base cell:
- If the Base cell turns out to be X, then Wing 1 is forced to become Z.
- If the Base cell turns out to be Y, then Wing 2 is forced to become Z.
Because the Base cell can only hold X or Y, we hit a logical certainty: regardless of the final value in the base cell, one of the highlighted cells will contain the value Z (in our example, the value 1).

How to Eliminate Candidates (Step-by-Step)
Because one of those two outer wings must contain the number 1, any cell on the board that looks at both wings simultaneously can never hold a 1. That means that the value 1 can’t be placed in any cell that sees both highlighted cells.

To apply this to your game:
- Identify the Triangle: Find your Base cell (e.g.,
XY) and its two aligned Wings (e.g.,XZandYZ). - Find the Overlap Zone: Look for any empty cells that share a row, column, or block with both Wings at the same time. These are the cells that “see” both ends of the trap.
- Wipe out the candidate: If any of those overlapping cells contain Z (the number 1) in their pencil notes, delete it immediately.
