How to Master the 2-String Kite Strategy in Sudoku
When basic lines and pairs no longer break the gridlock in Expert puzzles, it is time to look for single-digit chain patterns. The 2-String Kite technique is an elegant advanced strategy that connects a row and a column through a shared 3×3 block to eliminate candidates elsewhere on the grid.
The Anatomy of a 2-String Kite
To find the correct 2-string kite chain, you need to find a row and a column that each contain exactly two instances of the same candidate.
Have a look at this example:

- The Row String: A horizontal row where a specific candidate appears exactly twice.
- The Column String: A vertical column where that same candidate also appears exactly twice.
- The Hinge (The Shared Block): One candidate from the row and one candidate from the column must be in the same block.

These two cells inside the shared block act as the “hinge” of the kite. Because both cannot hold the candidate at the same time, at least one of them will be forced false, which immediately drives the candidate to the opposite end of the kite.
The Elimination Rule
This structure guarantees that at least one of the outer ends of the kite must contain the target candidate.
Because one of the two ends is guaranteed to hold that number when the board is solved, the candidate that can see both ends of the 2-string kite can be eliminated.

To clear pencil notes using this technique, locate the intersection point of the two outer “wings”:
- Find the outer cell of the row (the end outside the shared block).
- Find the outer cell of the column (the end outside the shared block).
- Follow the column of the first end and the row of the second end until they intersect.
If the empty cell at that exact intersection point contains your target candidate, delete it from your pencil notes immediately.
