A Jellyfish is formed when a single candidate number is restricted to a maximum of four cells in four parallel lines (rows or columns), and all these cells perfectly align into the exact same four perpendicular lines.

Imagine we are tracking the number 9 across four vertical columns. When scanning your pencil notes, you notice a highly unique pattern:

  1. In Column A, the number 9 can only appear in Rows 1, 3, 5, or 9.
  2. In Column B, the number 9 can only appear in Rows 3, 5, or 9.
  3. In Column C, the number 9 can only appear in Rows 1, 5, or 9.
  4. In Column D, the number 9 can only appear in Rows 1, 3, or 5.

Here you can see that number 9 in these columns can only be found in the highlighted cells. Even though not every cell contains a 9, all these options are strictly trapped within the exact same four horizontal rows (Rows 1, 3, 5, and 9).

  2. Find Four Parallel Lines: Look for four columns where that candidate appears a maximum of four times.
