The Hidden Quad technique is the ultimate strategy in the hidden subsets family. Like in the ‘Hidden Triple’ technique, you need to spot some hidden candidates, but four this time.

Because four target numbers are buried beneath a mountain of other pencil notes, finding a Hidden Quad requires keen observation, but executing it can instantly break open a gridlock.

The Logic Behind a Hidden Quad

A Hidden Quad occurs when four specific numbers appear as candidates within only four cells of a single unit (row, column, or 3×3 block).

To make it challenging, these four cells will usually hold two, three, or four other candidates as well, effectively masking the pattern. However, because those four unique digits must go somewhere in that unit, and there are only four cells available to take them, those four spots become strictly reserved.

Across the rest of the unit, the digits 3, 4, 7, and 8 do not appear in any other pencil notes. This creates a logical trap: no matter how the numbers fall, those four cells are guaranteed to absorb 3, 4, 7, and 8.

How to Clean the Grid (Step-by-Step)

While Naked strategies remove candidates from the rest of the unit, Hidden strategies work in reverse: you remove the extra noise from the inside of the target cells.

  1. Find the Isolated Four: Identify four numbers (e.g., 3, 4, 7, and 8) that appear exclusively within the same four cells of a row, column, or block.
  2. Lock the Cells: Recognize that these four spots are legally claimed by your target numbers.
  3. Eliminate the Clutter: If so, this means any other numbers can’t be found in these cells and can be eliminated. Strip away every other candidate (like 1, 2, 5, 6, or 9) from the pencil notes inside those four cells.

What remains? Four clean cells holding only combinations of 3, 4, 7, and 8, making the rest of the puzzle vastly easier to solve.

Hidden Quads can be uncovered in any region of the grid:

  • In 3×3 Blocks: Stripping away extra notes inside a box often reveals immediate Pointing Pairs or Naked Singles in intersecting lines.
  • In Lines: A Hidden Quad can also be found in a column or a row. Clearing multiple candidates along a full horizontal or vertical line frequently creates a powerful domino effect across neighboring blocks.
