7 Advanced Master-Level Techniques
Expert Sudoku strategies focus on multi-cell logic, pivot combinations, and distant candidate links. Learning to identify these patterns will help you dismantle the most stubborn boards without ever having to guess.
1. Naked Quad
A Naked Quad occurs when four cells within the same unit (row, column, or block) contain a total pool of no more than four unique candidate digits (e.g., combinations of [2, 4, 6, 8]). Because these four numbers are strictly locked into these four spots, you can safely eliminate all four digits from the pencil notes of every other cell in that shared unit.
2. Hidden Quad
A Hidden Quad happens when four specific candidates appear exclusively within four cells of a single unit, hidden beneath extra pencil notes. Since those four target digits are legally required to land in those four spots, you can strip away all other extra candidates from inside those four cells.
3. XYZ-Wing
An extension of the XY-Wing that adds a third candidate to the base cell. An XYZ-Wing consists of a 3-candidate pivot cell ([X, Y, Z]) connected to two 2-candidate wing cells ([X, Z] and [Y, Z]). This lock forces target digit Z into one of the three cells, allowing you to eliminate Z from any empty cell that sees all three highlighted cells simultaneously.
4. WXYZ-Wing
Taking wing patterns a step further, the WXYZ-Wing involves a group of four interconnected cells that share a combined pool of four candidate digits. One central pivot cell shares a unit with three wing cells, locking a common target candidate across the structure. Any cell that shares a line or block with all four highlighted cells can have that common candidate safely erased.
5. Skyscraper
A Skyscraper is a single-digit chaining technique built on two parallel lines (rows or columns) containing a specific candidate. When both lines have exactly two instances of that candidate, and two of those points share a single connecting line (forming the “base”), the other two points act as the “roof tops.” You can eliminate that candidate from any empty cell that sees both roof tops at the same time.
6. 2-String Kite
The 2-String Kite strategy connects a row and a column through a shared 3×3 block using a single candidate. When a row and a column each contain exactly two instances of a candidate, and one end from each meets inside the same 3×3 box (the hinge), at least one of the outer ends must hold the digit. Any empty cell located at the intersection of the two outer ends can have that candidate deleted.
7. Turbot Fish (Turbot Crane)
A Turbot Fish is a foundational single-digit chain technique using an odd number of alternating strong and weak links (typically five links across rows, columns, and blocks). By connecting a series of conjugate pairs across the grid, the chain proves that one of its two outer endpoints must contain the candidate, allowing you to clear that number from any cell that sees both ends of the chain.
