How to Spot Hidden Singles Using Pencil Notes

Once you start using candidates to solve advanced puzzles, you will quickly realize that not every answer stands out down in the open. The Hidden Single technique also uses pencil notes, but it’s a bit harder to spot the correct answer compared to Naked Single.

While a Naked Single leaves a cell with only one solitary digit, a Hidden Single is masked. The target cell might contain several different pencil notes, making it look undecided. However, when you look at the bigger picture, you will discover that a certain number has only one valid home left in the entire unit.

The Logic Behind the Hidden Single Technique

Why do we call it “Hidden”? Because if you look at the cell by itself, it looks crowded with options. But if you shift your focus to the whole row, column, or 3×3 block, you will see that a specific number appears as a candidate only once in that entire area.

Since every number from 1 to 9 must be placed somewhere in every unit, that unique cell becomes the only logical choice for that number, automatically eliminating all other notes inside it.

To successfully find a Hidden Single among your notes, follow these steps:

  1. Focus on a specific unit: Now take a look at the highlighted block.
  2. Scan a single number: Pick a digit (for example, the number 1) and count how many times it appears as a small pencil note across the 3×3 block.
  3. Isolate the unique candidate: As we evaluate the options, we can see that number 1 appears inside of only one cell within this block. All other cells contain different combinations like 4, 5, 7, or 8, but completely lack a 1.

Solve the cell: It means that it is the only place for number 1 in the block. You can safely erase the other notes in that cell and write down a permanent 1.

Scanning Rows and Columns

Just like other basic strategies, you should never limit your search to just the 3×3 squares. Hidden Single can also be applied in a column or row.

When scanning a long horizontal row or a vertical column, look for a candidate that shows up exactly once along the entire line. Even if that cell is filled with three other pencil notes, the fact that no other cell in the row can hold that specific digit makes it the definitive answer.

Elevate Your Sudoku Solving Speed

Mastering the Hidden Single technique is what separates intermediate players from true experts. It trains your brain to look past the clutter of multiple pencil notes and spot the true layout of the board.
