When candidate reductions and basic pairs are no longer enough to break open a gridlock, you must rely on advanced geometric patterns and logical chains. Hard-level Sudoku puzzles require tracking how single or multiple candidates interact across distant rows, columns, and 3×3 blocks to perform high-level pencil note cleanups.
4 Essential Hard-Level Techniques
Hard Sudoku techniques move beyond local units, focusing instead on grid-wide alignments. Mastering these four advanced strategies allows you to strip away locked candidates and trigger domino reactions across the board.
1. X-Wing
An X-Wing is a single-digit pattern that uses two parallel rows and two parallel columns to form a perfect rectangle. When a specific candidate appears exactly twice in two different rows, and those candidates align in the same two columns, the digit is locked into the four corners of that rectangle. As a result, you can safely eliminate that candidate from all other empty cells in those two columns.
2. XY-Wing (Y-Wing)
The XY-Wing technique uses a trio of bi-value cells (cells containing exactly two candidates) arranged as a central “pivot” and two connected “wings”. If the pivot holds candidates [X, Y], one wing holds [X, Z], and the other holds [Y, Z], a logical lock is created: one of the two wings is guaranteed to contain candidate Z. This allows you to eliminate Z from any cell that can see both wings simultaneously.
3. Swordfish
A Swordfish is the three-line expansion of an X-Wing. It occurs when a specific candidate appears in no more than three cells across three parallel rows, and those candidates all align within the same three columns (or vice versa). This forms a 3×3 grid lock where the candidate is forced into those intersection points, allowing you to delete that digit from every other cell along those three columns.
4. Jellyfish
The Jellyfish strategy takes line-based candidate elimination to its maximum level. It functions just like an X-Wing or Swordfish, but spans four parallel rows and four parallel columns. When a candidate’s positions across four rows are restricted entirely to four shared columns, the candidate is locked into that 16-cell grid intersection. You can then sweep away that candidate from all other cells in those four columns.
